Australia 2014: Harvey - Dairy Days

Welcome to Harvey! The town of Harvey was our stopover for the road trip to the south of Perth city. But Harvey is not just a transit destination, it is also renowned for its delicious beef and dairy products as well as its fresh oranges. Harvey Tourism has this write-up about the town: Th e thriving south west town of Harvey, which is situated on the Harvey River, enjoys a unique Italian heritage. This cosmopolitan influence has resulted in a vibrant community with a relaxed and friendly lifestyle. In 1829, Captain James Stirling (later to become the first Governor of Western Australia) selected a quota of fertile land and called it the Harvey River Settlement, later named Harvey. Harvey is nestled on fertile, irrigated plains beneath the rolling foothills of the Darling Range and is approximately 20km from the coast. Swan Valley Escapades Although Kellers is located in the Swan Valley, Western Australia's oldest wine region and a destination in and of itself with numerous places to eat and drink, we did not plan an extensive itinerary there as we were already planning a visit to the famous Margaret River region, arguably the state's most famous destination. On hindsight, we would probably have spent more time exploring this lovely region with its various gourmet foods and beverages. We did, however, manage a short half-day outing prior to fetching Sue's parents from the airport - they were joining us for the remainder of the trip. First stop - Whistler's Chocolate Company. The Swan Valley outlet hosts a showroom and cafe. We enjoyed the tasting of the free chocolate samples. Personal verdict - the chocolate was a little more on the sweet side while we tended to prefer the dark variety; but the boys of course did not care.
